The Story of Made in Monique

I was constantly trying to convince myself that what I was doing the right thing, that this was my path, that I was happy.

“I design machines that check car parts so they don’t malfunction and kill people. I save lives.”

This is what I used to tell myself almost daily when I was an automotive technologist. I was constantly trying to convince myself that what I was doing was the right thing, that this was my path, that I was happy. Family and friends commented, “You must be so proud to be doing what you do. Going through all that schooling.” but to me, I didn’t feel whole.

Here’s the thing about being an automotive designer. You sit inside this dark room, the blinds closed shielding the sunshine, with about three to ten other designers. You sit in “open” cubicles, or at long coffin-like desks. Everyone is about six feet away from each other, and if everyone actually stretched out their arms, you would be able to touch the next person’s hand. Here’s the creepy part. No one talks to each other. No one.

If you need to speak with someone, you email them. If you have a question, want to grab lunch, or need to go down to the shop floor to look at equipment, you message your boss or another employee. Let’s say that you did speak, it would echo down the hall, or throughout the room and you were told to keep it down. This was eerie and uncomfortable for me.

Not only was there no connection with co-workers, there was no connection to the people who were benefiting from what I was doing. This is why after five years, I left. (Five years! Wow. Now that I read this over I can’t believe I lasted that long!) How can you stay working eight to twelve hours a day, where you feel like a zombie, because all of your emotions have been sucked out by the fluorescent lights?

After leaving the industry, I moved throughout Canada. I was meeting people from different walks of life working food & beverage, sales, and marketing positions. I volunteered in every town I lived in, but I missed the technology.

WHY AM I SO TORN BETWEEN THESE TWO WORLDS!

One day it came together. I found this wonderful position that would forever change my life. Being a virtual assistant. Although as most adventures go, it had some rocky parts. I started training (tossing money away) with a not so helpful program online. I felt discouraged, but knew there was something to this VA business-thing.

While in bed cruising the internet on my phone, I found it. The holy grail of virtual assistant programs. It was Michelle Dale and her company, Virtual Miss Friday. Finally I had the resources and training I was looking for. I finally knew that I could bring together my two passions, helping people and technology.
